For old hardware nothing beats Debian stable and you don't have to deal with outdated software.

Ward, this article was specifically meant for an old PC, one that would have a hard time running most modern Linux distros, and lots of people recommend using older distros that were made at a time when the computers weren't as powerful as today.

To answer your question, I don't see any reason why a new Ubuntu, or other distro wouldn't be able to do the same things as this, like running a SAMBA server, etc.

I am a bit confused, in the article you say to download ubuntu (5.10). Does this mean that I can only use an older version of Ubuntu for this install or can I use a more current version?

Hi!
Nice article.
One question: I have a broadband cable connection from my ISP with a dynamic IP. The cable enters the wireless router and then my PC and wireless is used for a laptop. Is it possible to set up a file server over the Internet to access my files from everywhere using this Linux method on a second PC? I mean not just share some file on the home network, but over the Internet, having no fix IP.
Thank you!
